Trouble Sleeping

May 20, 2008 / by yayachick

I have no idea why, but lately I have trouble sleeping. I've always had a hard time getting to sleep, but lately I just can't seem to get any sleep whatsoever. I work long hard days either doing homework or working one of my two jobs, plus I am physically training for the Police Academy. I should be tired after such long strenuous days and I feel tired, but I just can't get to sleep. I toss and turn constantly, unable to get comfortable. I sometimes get to the point of having an anxiety attack and so I get up, go outside and walk a bit in my backyard trying to get fresh air. Maybe I can't sleep because it's been so hot lately, I don't know. I mean, we have air conditioning so it's not too hot in my house, but maybe it is still a main factor in why I can't sleep. I think last night I might have gotten about two hours worth of broken up sleep. Now I have to go and take care of a one year old energetic baby for eight hours (One of my jobs is a nanny the other is I work as an EMT in a local emergency room). Then I have to come home and do some more homework before taking my dog for her evening run. I have to take her too, or else she'll howl all night outside my bedroom window. Besides the run might help make me tired enough to sleep.

I had a bout with a cold about two weeks ago and so I was taking Nyquil at night which would knock me out for almost the whole night. I know this sounds bad, but I got so desperate for sleep the night before my math final that I took some Nyquil even though I was no longer sick. It's bad, but I'm still tempted to try taking some Nyquil lately just so I can get some sleep. I won't but I want to. My mom wants me to go see a sleep doctor, but I hate doctors and try to avoid having to be a patient whenever it's possible for me. Anyways, I better get going. I have to be at work by ten so ciao for now and keep your fingers crossed for me so that I might get some sleep tonight!

    hi,

Your have trouble sleeping there is something God is teeling you in a dream or vision but your fighting it, that is why you have less sleep or none all. Ask God about the this and he will put you to sleep to reveal the dream or vision just for you.

Some things that will help you is if you make sure you try to lay down during a particular time when you should try to fall asleep.  Make sure the room is dark, quiet and a comfortable temperature.  If needed, have a fan and/or humidifier to make sure it is comfortable.  Be sure to avoid eating anything 3-4 hours before bedtime.  Reading a book or listening to music can help you get relaxed.  Try to clear busy thoughts or negative/worry type thoughts out of your head.  Exercising 3 hours or less before bedtime is a no-no since that gets your heart rate up and more oxygen in your blood which puts more energy in your blood and will prevent you from feeling sleepy enough to fall asleep on your own.  Only use your bed for sleeping or bedtime activities.  Don't use your bed during the day to read books, watch tv or do lounge.  This will help your body associate having a specific place to settle down in.  If after a week of trying to fit yourself into a sleep schedule -- if it doesn't happen then maybe it is time to see a sleep specialist.  They may be able to let you know of both prescription medications and natural solutions (such as non-caffeined tea) to help you fall asleep, stay asleep and get quality rest. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I think I will try not exercising too close to my bedtime. Maybe that's the problem.

Here's a suggestion that worked for me.  About an hour before sleep get in a tub of hot as you can stand water (no not a hot tub) just relax there for 20 to 30 minutes if possible, then go to your room and listen to some new age music (Kitaro did  it for me) and let your mind just drift to the sounds.  Sounds crazy but it works, candles would be nice but to dangerous.  Try it at least 3 times  good luck

Thanks! I'll try everything that everyone suggests. I'll have to wait to try that on Monday night though because I have my graveyard shift at the hospital this weekend. Maybe working those hours is what's keeping me from being able to sleep. Hmmm...

You know if worst comes to worst power naps have the same effect as a good nites rest if you get a few in.  Even just closing your eyes helps alot.
