I have been writing "novels" for the my mother, sister, and friends to enjoy. I recently submitted one of my "novels" to Dorrance Publishing Co., and I just received a response from them yesterday. They are interested in publishing my book, advertising it, etc. The only problem is that they want me to, of course, invest money, approximately six to ten grand, money I don't have. My question here is, does anyone know how I would go about publishing my own book without having to invest so much money, or how I can start off with my books as e-books? Please let me know if you can help. Thank you!

Nice score with the publisher, sucks that you don't have the money to invest though. I can't give much advice, but I think I know somewhat of a loophole for investing in your publisher. If you can publish a short story in a magazine then you'll be considered a "published" author, what this means is that the bigger publishers won't turn you down before even looking at your work, and with more options you can get a publisher that will publish for free. btw, I've never heard of a publisher asking for that much money, I'm a little suspicious about it's credibility. What I do know is that larger publishers don't ask for that much money, or money at all, and with "published author" succeeding your name it should be a little easier to grab a bigger publisher.
You might know about this already but there is a publishing site I have been using called Lulu.com. There is no cost until you get to the point buying a proof copy. Through Lulu I have one of my books recently posted on Amazon ans B&N's website. All right, I'll shut up now, good luck with your writing

Good luck with the writing. After a year and two finished books on Lulu I can honestly say that except for cyberspace having it's usual bad hair days I have no complaints with the site.
